IFSCC 2011

Overview

The IFSCC 2011 Conference was a landmark event in the field of cosmetic science, hosted by the Society of Cosmetic Chemists of Thailand (SCCT) from December 12–14, 2011 at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. The conference brought together leading cosmetic scientists, industry professionals, and innovators from around the world, marking one of the largest gatherings in Asia’s cosmetic industry.

Theme: The 3Es — Effective, Economic & Ecological

The central theme, “Effective, Economic & Ecological,” highlighted the need for advanced yet sustainable cosmetic science—focusing on innovations that are both effective in application and mindful of economic and environmental responsibilities

Program Highlights

– **Technical Sessions:** Over 120 scientific presentations, including 52 oral talks and 75 posters, covering breakthroughs in cosmetic research, novel ingredients, formulation technologies, and safety evaluations

– **Awards:** 

  – *IFSCC Conference Award* for best research presentation.

  – *Henry Maso Award* for scientists aged 40 or younger, awarded to Dr. Theeraya Krisdaphong of Thailand for research on the antimicrobial activity of Garcinia mangostana.

  – *Host Society Award* for the best presentation from the host society.

  – *Maison G. de Navarre Award* for young scientists’ essays

– **Industry Exhibition:** Collaboration with in-cosmetics Asia arranged a major trade exhibition, featuring the latest ingredient innovations, technology showcases, and networking opportunities for attendees from across the globe

– **Workshops & Seminars:** A full calendar of formulation workshops, marketing trends presentations, and specialized innovation seminars supported knowledge exchange and professional growth

International Impact

Participants included renowned scientists, academic leaders, R&D professionals, and regulatory experts from over 16 countries, fostering collaboration across continents. Notably, Shiseido won the top award for research on self-dissolving microneedles as an anti-wrinkle treatment, further validating the conference’s role as a premier international stage for scientific excellence

Legacy

Despite challenging circumstances due to flooding in Bangkok, the event proceeded smoothly and received high praise for its organization, showcasing Thailand’s capabilities in hosting world-class scientific gatherings. The IFSCC 2011 Conference helped strengthen scientific advancement, international cooperation, and the visibility of Thai innovation within the global beauty and personal care sector

Awards & Competitions

These award platforms are crucial in spotlighting innovation, scientific progress, and talent within Thailand’s vibrant cosmetic science community, offering recognition and new collaborative opportunities in both academic and commercial spheres:

1. In-Cosmetics Asia Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Awards

**Description:** 

This premier award, presented annually during in-cosmetics Asia in Bangkok, honors the best new cosmetic ingredient innovations within the Asia-Pacific region. There are categories for active and functional ingredients, as well as the Spotlight On Award for formulated ingredients. Winners are selected by a panel of international industry experts.

**Submission Criteria:**

– Eligible products must be launched within 8 months prior to the event.

– Open to raw material and ingredient suppliers with a presence in Asia-Pacific.

– Entrants must submit detailed technical documentation, safety data, and efficacy information for consideration.

**Deadlines:**

– Submissions generally close in August or September each year, with the awards ceremony hosted in early November during the event at BITEC, Bangkok.

**Special Recognition:** 

The “9 Faces of the APAC Beauty Industry” celebrate and honor individual innovators and teams shaping the personal care sector in Asia-Pacific

2. Henry Maso Award for Young Scientists (IFSCC)

**Description:** 

A prestigious international science award recognizing outstanding scientific papers in cosmetic science by young scientists (age 40 or under). The award is presented at the IFSCC Congress; recipients may include researchers from Thailand.

**Submission Criteria:**

– Candidates must be under 40 at the time of submission.

– The submitted research must be original and published in the IFSCC Magazine.

– Judged on innovation, scientific quality, and relevance[4].

**Deadlines:**

– Applications are annually aligned with IFSCC Congress timelines (typically by Q2 each year).

3. Thailand Research Expo Awards (Cosmetic Science Category)

**Description:** 

The Thailand Research Expo, organized by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), features awards for outstanding research and innovation, including cosmetic science and the broader health and beauty arena.

**Submission Criteria:**

– Open to Thai universities, research institutes, and individual researchers.

– Entries must demonstrate scientific merit, application impact, and alignment with sustainable development themes

**Deadlines:**

– Submissions are invited annually, with the expo typically held in August.

**Recent Recipients:**

– **2023 Silver Award:** Mae Fah Luang University for the “Bio-Circular-Green Economic Model (BCG) cosmetics for the sustainable development of creative community” project, which focused on community-driven, natural cosmetic product development and local economic empowerment

4. University-Sponsored Cosmetic Science Competitions

**Description:** 

Thai universities such as Mae Fah Luang University and Chulalongkorn University host competitions and camps for students engaging in cosmetic science research. Awards are given to outstanding mini-projects in color cosmetics, skin care, and hair care.

**Criteria & Deadlines:**

– Projects are typically submitted as part of coursework or university-sponsored camps/programs.

– Awards are given annually, with deadlines varying by institution

– **2018 International Cosmetic Science Research Gold Prize:** Awarded to Mae Fah Luang University’s School of Cosmetic Science student team for innovation in cosmetic research

5. Other Notable Thai and Regional Awards

**National Innovation Awards (NIA):**

– Run annually by the National Innovation Agency, with special categories for health and beauty innovation

– Criteria include originality, scientific impact, and potential for commercialization.

– The deadline and application process are announced each year in line with Thailand Innovation Day.

**Toray Science Foundation Awards:**

– Focus on science and technology, including biomaterials and natural products research with cosmetic applications

– Recipients include researchers pioneering extraction and application tech for cosmetic ingredients.
